Abstract:
This article is aimed to consider romantic love and how it can be a risk factor in gender violence in teenage relationships. In order to discuss this theoretical debate, the starting point is differential socialization process, and how this is represented in men and women’s lives, giving them a couple of gender roles and rules, which are replicated by different socializing agents. Gender-based violence is a social problem not commonly associated with teenage relationships. In such relationships alarm signs should arise, due to how teenagers understand what love is. In this stage there are no model references, so the prevalent love model becomes the main in their lives. In our current society this prevalent love model is based on a romantic love and myths about it. Likewise, we can see a congruence between romantic love and differential socialization in inputs about how we should love, feel, behave and think, according to our gender. Finally, the myths of romantic love are shown, which, in being assimilated by the individual, they have more influence and/or they act as risk factors for gender-based violence.
