Abstract:
We all age, that is a fact of life, a reality each one of us has to face and live as we want, without social restrictions and not being at the mercy of stereotypes. The objective of this article is to help us to familiarise ourselves with the possibility of growing old independently at home, with carers providing a certain amount of home help, but maintaining autonomy as something that should be acknowledged and accepted; as well as the need to overcome the still remaining obstacles and prejudices common to present day believes. An option of a way of life that is becoming more usual in our society. Another aim is to define and show alternatives to institutional residential homes as the increase in life expectancy, with countries becoming more developed, brings with it an increase in benefits and help to living a life in a more secure and independent way. The objective is to form an analyse of how older people feel and cope with growing old at home and in a more active sustained way with having to give up any of the benefits which they would have in a residential home; and at the same time not having to go through the problematic adaptations required when having to leave their family and social surroundings. The article takes a qualitative stance, based on previous investigation, which is data relating to growing old alone in a residential home. Contrasting this with theoretical information from various written sources what can be drawn from this is that growing old at home is a present day fact, and to a large extent, a residential preference rather than a lack of an alternatives.
