The present work is based on what is at present the area of Physical Education within ESO (Compulsory Secondary Education). It also aims to upgrade a sector traditionally considered a 'poor relation' despite its highly valid educational objectives, quite comparable to those of any other area curriculum. The education of an individual is not based on cognitive advancement alone - motor activities also contribute to personal enrichment. That is to say, any one aspect of a person's overall development is as important as all the others. This study also reflects the opinion of a whole group of PE teachers at present operating within the compulsory secondary system: their hopes and interests, the underlying problems of the area, the boundaries of the area within the LOGSE law. With this starting point it will be possible to present proposals for improvements in the area of PE at the secondary level and indeed at all levels of education. The first part of the wok is the theoretical framework, which in itself has two subsections: the first is the conceptual aspect with an analysis of three basic concepts, namely Physical Education, the curriculum and the teaching?staff. The aims of the research are:1. To identify the characteristics of the ESO centres in Tarragona Province.2. To analyse the characteristics of PE teachers who are working within the ESO and their initial and ?permanent training.3. To find out about the organisation of the area by the different centres in the Province on the basis of the LOGSE.4. To evaluate the quantity and quality of installations, equipment and material within PE area teaching.5. To test the use of key factors in the reform, such as interdisciplinary? aspects, diversity and evaluation.6. To find out the opinions of ESO PE teachers with regard to different aspects of the reform, and the classes. We might have considered more aims, but with these six we have demonstrated that sufficient information has been obtained to talk about the topic. Our way of obtaining information was a ?questionair in which there were a series of questions designed to elicit enformation on: the characteristics of ESO PE teachers, their initial and ?permanent training, the organisation of the area, whether the material resources and installations condition the teaching in this area, and testing the use of key factors in the LOGSE reform. This data will be validated in depth by interviewing key people?informants. The final section of the work is the analysis of the questionair's results. Results of the data obtained are analysed with relation to the aims of the present study and to the SPSS statistical program. We have also taken into consideration the analysis and treatment of the data with ?the factor analysis and the Cronbach ?Alpha. Once analysis of the results has been realized, the conclusions will be drafted on the basis of the aims of this study.During the progress of this work I have noticed the emergence of a number of queries which I have drawn up in a separate section, plus a number of limitations within the research. The present work has been realized during a time period of full application of the LOGSE. At present we find our way towards a new educational reform blocked. If society evolves, the educational system must too. LOGSE has produced a quantitive and qualicative improvement in the area of Physical Education which must not be lost in the introduction of the new Law.
