    Resumen:
In this study we evaluated the relationship between oral exposure to aluminum (Al) administered at different doses and for different periods of time and Alzheimer's disease at behavioral, cognitive, biochemical and neural domains in two populations of mice with different genetic vulnerability to develop Alzheimer's disease. The findings of this study indicated that the exposure to Al induced effects in all the domains studied. First at behavioral level, since exposure to aluminum increased anxiety and activity in the groups exposed. Second, at the cognitive level as exposure to Al generated learning deficits, particularly in genetically susceptible mice population. Finally, some effects of the metal exposure were observed in the neurogenic response at the level of cellular proliferation and at the biochemical level, where exposure to Al during long periods of time increased the levels of β-amyloid 1-42 peptide. This is important because the aggregation of this peptide is postulated as a central event in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease.
