    Abstract:
Introduction: In the elderly, circadian cycles undergo modifications that directly affect rest. Lack of sleep is related to a wide range of negative health outcomes. The difficulty for conciliation and maintaining sleep and the appearance of daytime sleepiness are frequent features in this group. Objective: Identify the factors that affect the sleep quality of the elderly Methodology: A bibliographic review was carried out using the PubMed, CINAHL and Cuiden databases applying the key words related to the objective. Results: 15 articles have been selected showing different factors that cause sleep disorder in the elderly. They have been classified into predisposing factors such as: physiological aging, health status and frailty, cognitive deterioration, mood disorders and dementias. And in precipitating factors such as the use of drugs, institutionalization and exposure to nocturnal artificial light. Conclusions: The factors that interfere in the sleep quality of the elderly are of multifactorial origin, from the physiological aging of the individual to the comorbidity with other pathologies.
