Preliminary Clonal Characterization of Malvasia volcanica and Listan prieto by Simple Sequence Repeat (SSR) Markers in Free-Phylloxera Volcanic Vineyards (Lanzarote and Fuerteventura (Canary Islands, Spain))

    Abstract:
    Climate change is a viticulture challenge prompting exploration of Vitis vinifera biodiversity. This study examined intra-varietal diversity of Malvasia volcanica and Listan prieto in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, islands with desert-like climates, volcanic soils free of phylloxera, and centuries-long cultivation history. Of 107 accessions analyzed, 93.46% were variable. The most divergent were Malvasia Dubrovacka (LNZ-87) and Listan prieto (FTV-8) with five variations; Listan prieto (FTV-13) had four; seven had three variations. Of 100 SSR markers, 17 were polymorphic; seven were highly informative and VVNTM1 was monomorphic. All markers supported Malvasia volcanica’s parentage (Malvasia Dubrovacka × Bermejuela), with three suggesting possible mutations.
