Abstract:Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) causes considerable morbidity and mortality in Spain, with a large consumption of health resources. The main cause is smoking. Despite the fact there is no cure for COPD, it can be avoided resulting in an improvement in the quality of life and an increase the survival rate, through available therapeutic resources, among which are the rehabilitation and health education. Rehabilitation includes training programs designed to improve dyspnea, fatigue and exercise tolerance. It consists of physical training programs, health education psychological intervention, conduct intervention and education on diet and nutrition. In the last decades nutritional management of COPD has gained the interest it deserves, traditionally, weight loss had been considered an inevitable and irreversible component of the disease process, ascribing nutritional support an adverse effect by inducing higher ventilatory and metabolic work. In the present work a literature review of whether the food has a protective effect on lung function in patients affected by COPD. The methodology used is the search in the following databases of health sciences: PubMed and CINAHL, selecting the most relevant according to the “I-Cercador” (tool provided by the Universitat Rovira i Virgili) considering the inclusion criteria in a time period not exceeding 10 years. As a result, 15 articles analyzed relate food as a modifiable factor of COPD. In conclusion, patients with COPD may benefit from a diet rich in vegetables, fruits and vegetables, fiber and olive oil; while diets rich in sugars and cured meats may worsen your condition. The authors analyzed match to mark the diet as a modifiable risk factor in the treatment of COPD, although the significance is weak and should continue work.
