Abstract:Abstract Nowadays for environmental, economic and social reasons, the substitution of petroleum-based chemical building blocks is emerging as a crucial necessity. Because of that, the utilization and the incorporation of renewable raw materials, in particular from de biomass, for chemical processes are considered as a sustainable and suitable alternative. Fatty acids from natural oils occupy a prominent place because of their easily accessible and present quantity. In this work, 10-undecenoic acid, obtained in one step from ricinoleic acid of castor oil, was used as a renewable resource to obtain a monomeric product, dihydroxiundecanoic acid, which was used to carry out its polymerization testing different types of catalysts such as Sn(Oct)2, PTSA or I2/P(Ph)3/imidazol to obtain a functionalized polyester. After obtaining the polymer it was modified with a bioactive molecule, L-cysteine, to produce biomaterials with the suitable functional groups for anchoring peptides, proteins and other bioactive molecules which can be used in drug delivery devices.
