Abstract:This document explains the method development for laser diffraction particle size distribution measurements of two different silicas, Sipernat 2200 and Sipernat 22. These materials are commonly used as additives to improve the flowability of the product, so it’s important to know the particle size of them because it affects the final product properties. Laser diffraction spectrometry is a technique utilised for particle size determination since it quickly gives in a wide range of sizes (nm to mm) the particle dimensions with precision. Two techniques were used for the sample dispersion, wet dispersion in water as dispersant and dry powder dispersion. Methods for both techniques were developed and optimized for the two products and repeatability and reproducibility of the optimal methods for each silica was tested.
