Abstract:The main goal of this dissertation is to design a Decision Aid regarding the choice of a hormonal contraception method based on women’s opinions, values and needs. To do so, the investigation has been carried out in two defined stages. The first stage consisted in a bibliographic review about both contraception and Decision Aids, to gather a theoretical frame to be taken as a reference for the investigation. Subsequently, the qualitative technique of focal groups has been used to obtain information about the knowledge that women have regarding hormonal contraceptives, the items or attributes they value the most when choosing a method; and the information they request to make this choice, in terms of both quantity and quality. Two groups were carried out with a total of 13 women. The results showed a lack of knowledge about hormonal contraceptives, regarding their composition, drug action and utilization. It has also been confirmed the existence of concerns about the use of hormones; as well as a persistence of old, false and baseless beliefs about them. It has also been observed that there is a variability among the women in the level of satisfaction they express regarding the counseling received from their health providers, as for the quantity and quality of the information. The combination of these factors places us in a scenario in which the consequences due to method fails (issues with compliance, dropouts, etc.) could be prevented with an effective counseling. In this context, Decisions Aids are presented as a valuable resource for health providers and women, to guide or support such an important choice.
