Abstract:SUMMARY The boiler number 6 of the Bayer Material Science, SL energy plant is studied in this report. This boiler is used in a cogeneration process in order to recuperate the residual heat of combustion gases that are produced in a gas turbine. The turbine is supposed to be operating at a 100 % of its capacity and there is no possibility to modify this condition. High pressure steam is produced in the boiler by reducing the residual gas temperature. The steam pressure is 30 bar, and its temperature is 325 degrees, approximately. After this process, the escape gases are emitted to the atmosphere using a chimney, which is situated at the boiler exit. This chimney is made of carbon steel, so there´s a limitation in the gas temperature reduction, as the vapor fraction in these gases can condense and cause corrosion. Different optimization strategies are studied in order to determine the economically optimal one. Other design limitations, as the free space inside the boiler, the escape gases pressure drop and the equipment maintenance are also considered. Finally, an exhaustive economic evaluation of the chosen alternative is made in order to determine its viability. The final decision is exposed to the project client.
