Abstract:Nowadays, most concrete floors of parking, industrial and commercial premises, etc., are subjected to a high mechanical wear. To avoid this deterioration, pigmented epoxy coatings are used. First of all, one coat of primer is applied directly to the substrate and then several top coats for finishing. The purpose of this experimental work has been to find a method to ensure excellent appearance and optimal functionality of paints and coatings, removing one of the most undesirable phenomena in paintings such as bubbles. The products studied have been the primer coat Epoxy 100 and the top coat EP Coat 100, both with an alarming bubble generation. One of the main options to solve this problem is the defoamer additive, makes the bubbles rise to the surface of the coating and break. Various experiments have been tried varying the different substrates and applicators, increasing and reducing the concentration of additives, exchanging some defoamers for others, among many others. The final conclusion is a proposal to replace the defoamer additive with another with better defoaming characteristics and the surface additive by a silicone one that improves the leveling. Besides this, the additive dose of each of them has also been modified, reducing the concentration of defoamer additive and increasing the concentration of the leveling additive. In this way, the coating appearance improves and consequently its functionality is better.
