Abstract:Introduction: The rate of breastfeeding abandonment has increased exponentially from the second half of the XX century, reaching datums of 59’4% in the first six months, despite its many known benefits. As healthcare professionals we have the duty to adopt stances and to carry out interventions that facilitate its implementation and maintenance, because of the great influence power we own. Objectives: To define the interventions healthcare professionals can carry out in order to reduce the incidence rate of early abandonment of the breastfeeding practice. Methodology: Systematic review of the bibliography using as tool the Pubmed, CINAHL, COCHRANE, Dialnet, Enfispo and Enferteca databases. Inclusion criteria was: scientific dissemination articles and clinical trial published between 2014 and 2019 (included), in Spanish, Catalan or English and free access and full text. Results: healthcare professionals have an important role in the initiation and continuation of breastfeeding. The lack of promotion or support to LM from heath system end in a shrill decline of breastfeeding rates.34 Conclusion: the ultimate decision about the type of breastfeeding fall to the mother. Nevertheless, healthcare professionals must supply the accurate information and education, and provide the necessary support so breastfeeding is a successful experience
