Abstract:This study carries out an analysis of the betting market, focusing on online sports. The analysis covers the evolution of gambling practice in Spain, the legal framework that regulates it, as well as its economic relevance as a source of revenues. Online sports betting adds to the characteristics of the betting market: the promise of winning large amounts of money in a quick and easy way, the addiction and dependence of those who participate in it and, more widely, a disruption for the whole society. Some contributors to the rise of this dangerous business have been: the growth in the number of operators and consumers in recent years, the appealing characteristics of its online version, the intense persuasion and general reach of advertisements, the anonymity that comes along with an online interaction, the difficulty in controlling the identity of consumers and therefore their ability to make decisions, as well as all the new jobs createdto support this new business.
