Abstract:Palm oil is a product in high demand since its consumption has been growing the last years. The palm oil of this project is used for the industry dedicated to natural cosmetics and personal care products whose production plant is located in Germany. Currently, this oil is being transported by cargo ships from the Far East to Germany. This results in high costs and high logistic time. In order to reduce in logistic costs, cargo ships are wanted to dock at port of Tarragona, where it will be stored in a tank located in the External Tank Park of BASF Española S.L. and subsequently, it will be distributed to Germany by tanker trucks. The External Tank Park is a plot dedicated basically to the storage of products that arrive from the port of Tarragona. At the moment there are several tanks destined to the storage of necessary products in the different plants of BASF Española S.L. However, there are also two tanks that are not used. The present project consists in carrying out a study to adapt one of the tanks for the storage of palm oil derivates and the reception pipe. On the other hand, in order to clean the reception pipe, a pig installation will be designed. Finally, for the correct transportation and distribution of palm oil, a tanker truck loading facility will be designed. The main equipment of the project is the storage tank that, formerly, was used to store o-xylene, a liquid product at ambient temperature. However, palm oil remains liquid above a temperature of 40°C. As the reception line and the storage tank are currently designed for the storage of a liquid at ambient temperature, if the oil is stored without adapting the installation, it would solidify producing damage to equipment, the environment, people and it would cause great economic losses. In order to solve this problem, the existing installations are evaluated to determine if they should be adapted. In addition, the installations that must be implemented are designed, such as the pig installation used to clean the reception pipe once the product has been unloaded from the cargo ships, or the installation of tanker trucks loading. Finally, an economic study is carried out in order to determine the economic profitability of the project.
