Abstract:
Introduction: Currently, the institutions for the elder's care have intensified due to the increase in life expectancy and dementia, especially Alzheimer’s. Women’s figure, was and continues to be the main caregiver, but with their entry into the employment world, the care that was previously provided to the elderly has become being formal caregivers responsibility, those who, as their main objective, must be attend and care. The person with dementia requires to be supervised due to his general impairment. This fact, along with other stressors, will lead to the formal caregiver to exhibe the famous Burnout Syndrome, in which mistreatment of the Alzheimer’s elderly could be triggered. Objective: To analyze how Burnout Syndrome in healthcare professionals leads to situations of abuse in the institutionalized Alzheimer’s patient. Methodology: To prepare this work, a bibliographic review was conducted using different databases related to the health field: Pubmed, Dialnet, Scielo, Revista Española de Geriatría y Gerontología, Scopus and Google Scholar. Results: 18 articles were analyzed where it was found that the majority of people who are institutionalized are dependent, and suffer some type of dementia. It was observed that the elderly were victims of mistreatment caused by their formal caregivers, in which multiple variables influenced. The risk of institutional abuse is high in those dependent individuals with a previous history of the phenomenon. The restraints, known as a form of abuse, are not considered beneficial to patient’s safety or to promote autonomy. On the basis of the program for people with dementia, an improvement was shown in personal achievement and emotional exhaustion, reflected in the MBI questionnaire given to health personnel. On the other hand, attending talks and conferences benefited the caregiver both in the workplace and in the personal area, decreasing emotional exhaustion. Conclusion: Staff training helps to identify possible cases of abuse through detection and prevention programs. In addition, having optimal conditions in the workplace encourages work to be efficient compared to caring for the elderly.
