Abstract:The present project is about the application of Lean Management in Cepsa Comercial Petróleo Asfaltos factory, located in Tarragona. At the beginning, it focused to go deeper into the whole philosophy of Lean Management and extract all the possibilities and chances to use along the project. In addition, to fix all the new ideas, the 5S technique was applied in a common and usual place of the house. After the consolidation of the new ideas, they were used throughout the project. Firstly, the energy consumption of gas at the plant was studied and several measures that helped to reduce the gas bill were proposed. Secondly, ‘Value Stream Mapping’ was also used to find a new operating system for cooling and filling large bags, aimed at reducing the time spent during the whole process. Then, the steam production system was studied and different ways to improve it were investigated, first working on the automation of the valves and then changing the control of the system by means of new transmitters. Work has also been done on the sectorization of the areas by means of the new valves. Since ASESA’s steam is also used, a new steam meter has been studied and implemented to a better control of the system. At the same time, research was started on the possible improvement of bitumen recirculation. Because certain orders are larger than normal, the bitumen is stored in the largest available tanks. The product inside that tank suffered problems because of poor homogenization caused by a bad recirculation. Therefore, after studying and understanding the operation, the recirculation of the tank was improved, ensuring proper homogenization. The load losses and the power required to transport the product along the circuit were calculated to ensure that the pump installed in the process can pump the bitumen without problems. Nevertheless, the safety of the whole new recirculation was studied by making a HazOp and miniLOPA to avoid possible issues on the future. Also, the manufacturing report was enhanced because it was originally manual. Due to the amount of time that this required, a new automatic manufacturing report was developed, focused on being easy and simple. Finally, an economic study has been made to check whether the proposals are feasible to implement.
