Abstract:
Introduction Delirium is one of the most frequent complications in hospitalized elderly people. This syndrome, of complex etiology, is characterized by changes in the level of consciousness and deterioration of the patient's cognitive functions. There are different risk factors involved, and many of them modifiable. Non-pharmacological interventions play an important role in reducing its incidence. Objective.. To analyze the effectiveness of non-pharmacological interventions in daily clinical practice, aimed at hospitalized elderly patients, in the management of delirium prevention, and to identify the risk factors that can cause it. Method. A systematic review of the literature has been carried out, with PICO format (problem-intervention-result) and conversion to DECs and MeSH. The PubMed, Cinhal and Scopus databases were searched using the appropriate specific descriptors. Results. The scientific evidence found shows beneficial results over non-pharmacological treatment in the prevention of delirium, these being common in the different articles under study. These interventions are focused on the environment, facilitating sleep, avoiding sensory deprivation, avoiding pain, providing good lighting and orientation in space and time, among others. Health education also plays an important role. Discussion and conclusions. An individualized approach, taking into account the risk factors, is the key aspect in prevention. Articles that have dealt with non-pharmacological interventions have shown that they can reduce the prevalence, incidence and duration of delirium, addressing modifiable risk factors. Health education has also been addressed in different articles as a key point for its prevention.
