Abstract:This paper examines the historical evolution of women’s role in care responsibilities in order to analyse the profile of this main caretaker and explain the intrinsic reasons for which women still carry out this role. Consequently, this paper also analyses men’s role is in this situation, their implication in caring activities and how this role has been evolving during the last few years. Once the difference between roles and genders has been analysed, the paper delves into the repercussions of this unequal share in care responsibilities not only for the main actors concerned, such as the family, the government or the market, but also the repercussions for those countries where a great part of the necessary human resources for the current system come from. Finally, a series of constructive proposals have been highlighted. This proposes are meant to contribute to the development of the values, relations and structures required for a more efficient and equitable care system. This new system may overcome the important stagnation characterised by a significant genderbased division of labour and perpetuated by a paternalist and obsolete education which can only hinder the progression towards new social horizons.
