Abstract:Álvaro Díez Sánchez Design of an internal combustion engine for the Moto3 category Final Master's Project Adviser: Dr. Francesc Ferrando Master’s Degree in Industrial Engineering Summary This Project, develops the design of a motorcycle engine, especially born for taking part as a power unit at the FIM World Championships, at Moto3 category, or at minor regional championships, as their technical regulations are the same as the Moto3 regulations. The design has been developed from the thermodynamical behaviour of the engine, in order to get the loads over the mechanical components, and the parameters of the geometry of the cylinder head through CFD analysis and optimization. The mechanical design, has been developed splitting it in different areas, and includes static tests, modal analysis, and fatigue testing of all the components under loads. The layout of all the elements of the engine has been optimized, in order to get the most compact and stiff solution as possible, always minding the quality of the materials and the finishes, because although the budget is limited by regulations up to 12000€, it is so necessary to use first quality alloys that can stand the big loads they’ll have, without an excessive increasing of their weight, because we’d be losing performance. Thanks to FEM, this optimisation and verification has been possible for all the elements that have been created from the start, and thanks to the design manuals, all the normalized elements have been calculated and verified. It has been minded that the technical regulations are imposing us technical restrictions in certain areas, using the design freedom in these areas that aren’t under regulation. Tarragona June, 2016
