Abstract:Background: Physical activity (PA) is an important factor related to prevention and management of DMT2, but it is suggesting that requires a specific type of PA to be effective in patients, without affecting renal function. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a specific Physical Activity (PA) program for patients with DMT2 on the important health indicators for DM and benefit and quality of life, without affecting renal function. Methods: Interventional community trial, randomized and multicenter, with a control group, of 9 months in 300 diabetics. The intervention will consist of supervised walks of 75 minutes a day, 2 days a week in groups of 25-30 people along with resistance exercises. The hikes will be supervised by the nurse in charge of the CAP and a PA and a sports monitor, on alternate days. Subjects were divided in 2:1 proportion in two different groups: the control (GC) and the intervention (GI), being the last one the group that received the PA intervention. The descriptive characteristics of the subjects were taken before starting the trial. Physical activity volume (MET-min/week) was taken before and after the intervention in both groups as well as different parameters related to important health indicator problems, renal function and quality of life. Statistical analyzes were performed. Results: GI had a significant increase the PA after the trial (p = 0’000). Furthermore, performing PA caused a significant decrease in the levels of HbA1c, glucose and all the important health indicators for DM (weight, waist circumference, glucose, cholesterol, LDL, triglycerides and blood pressure). In renal function, all the values of the GI decreased at the end of the intervention, but urea values did it significantly (p = 0’042). According to the quality of life, there was a significant increase in the physical function (p = 0’000) and it was observed a tendency to improve all the mental and physical studied components of the GI group. Conclusions: The PA program provided cardiovascular benefits and increased physical function (thus improving quality of life), tending to improve the health status of patients with DMT2 without affecting kidney function.
