Abstract:The main objective of our investigation is to discover and to understand the experience of people with a chronic mental disorder dealing with the social stigma, which is currently present in our society yet. It is an interpretative hermeneutical qualitative study done by interviews’ analysis with the Heiddegerian method. The final sample consists of two people with schizophrenia and one person with borderline diagnose. After a specific analysis of the three interviews, in which we have been able to identify different categories and sub-categories according to the speech and the theme, we have found various results. Firstly we can confirm that the stigma is still affecting family, work, social and health environments. It also affects to people with that kind of diagnoses producing a lower self-esteem, self-discrimination and isolation due to their fear of being tried and rejected by others. At the same time, these conditions can evolve to self-stigma. Moreover, the three participants agree on the opinion that social life is more difficult for them but, also, when they have a trust relationship they are able to relate with naturalness. After the investigation, we think that social stigma is predetermined by our society’s cultural context and conditioned by false believings and lack of awareness. However, seems that this stigma is decreasing, especially thanks to the perseverance of mental health activists.
