Abstract:Digestive enzymes play a key role in the digestive system, which can be affected by environmental conditions. There are food intolerances, with intolerance to biogenic amines being common. In humans, histamine can be degraded by histamine-N-methyltransferase or by diamine oxidase, which is found in the intestinal mucosa and degrades exogenous histamine. Its malfunction leads to histamine intolerance and the appearance of undesirable symptoms. The study shows the reversible effect of certain drugs on the enzyme, through interactions with its active site, and discusses the relationship between nowadays common gastrointestinal symptoms and the importance of diagnosing and treating patients.
