Abstract:This article analyzes the balanced presence of women and men in politics over time. Despite the social changes that we have been suffering in recent centuries, the gender biases are still very present in our society based mainly on a patriarchal culture that separates the private and public sector. That fact tends to displace women into the reproductive sphere. It’s important to make a step forward on that topic and, therefore, to change the values that reinforce male figure and to fight for equality between women and men. That equality will generate a just and egalitarian society. The aims of this article is to find out whether measures that have been proposed to achieve parity are effective and reflected in the social reality of today or, otherwise, they have not reached the expected effects. The paper gives a legislative and historical scope from the last centuries till today, reviewing first all recommendations, declarations, treaties and laws that have been approved, and finalising with the measures that are being developed at the moment. Citizenship is made up of women and men and, therefore, political representation should not be differentiated by gender and both sexes should participate equally.
