This project presents the brushless motor as a real alternative for an automotive radiator cooling fan drive. A motor and a fan are used to reproduce to scale the original application, which uses a direct current motor. Since economy prevails in the automotive industry, any position sensor must be avoided. Several sensorless control methods are discussed. Then the selected control algorithm is developed. The results are compared to those obtained with the direct current motor. Besides, a Matlab- Simulink model is implemented. This tool enables the user to evaluate the effect of slight modifications in the motor or the load over the whole system. Finally, the fault detection is introduced. Its aim is to prevent, and even predict, the failures that the inverter can cause to the motor.
