Abstract:The present work proposes an approximation to the diversification process of American Spanish during the 19th century after three centuries of linguistic unity. After the arrival of Spanish to the New Continent, its different dialectal varieties developed convergence dynamics which encouraged a linguistic levelling phenomenon which, at the same time, led to the appearance of an American koiné which would remain practically untouched for 300 years. With the eclosion of independences, and after breaking off of the metropolis, came the strong entrance of a passionate philological debate into the social and political landscape, with the goal of determining whether the new Hispanic America should remain faithful to the peninsular standard or, on the other hand, empower and dignify the peculiarities of American speech in each of the new nations. With such a state of affairs, the language/identity dichotomy becomes the true protagonist of controversy: in the new independent America, the will to build new countries with clearly differentiated identities and, especially, different to the Spanish one, will be an agent as important for the evolution of language as history or society can be. Aside from linguistic policies, literature also played a role in this linguistic manipulation as an instrument of national construction —gauchesca literature is analyzed here as the creator of a rural dialectal variety of Argentinian speech which did not correspond a linguistic reality—. Parallel to these volitional agents of linguistic change, other natural agents went into action as well, feeding the dynamics of divergence experimented by American Spanish during this period, such as contact with other languages like indigenous, African or European ones —mainly English, French, Portuguese and Italian—.
