Abstract:
This paper analyses the differential object marking (DOM) in the variety of Spanish in contact with Catalan during the second half of the 19th Century. Specifically, two corpora with different degrees of formality written in Spanish in the city of Tarragona (Catalonia) have been studied and compared with a third corpus of letters in Spanish from areas without contact to other languages. The results indicate that Spanish-Catalan contact constrains the increase of DOM in Spanish, which is also influenced by other factors like register.
