This paper reflects on the home as an idealised environment and its cultural construction for ageing care. We consider that the notion of house acquires the meaning of home in a processual way. It is a double, interstitial, and porous plane, where social, political, economic, and cultural dimensions converge and condition the processes of "making home" in long-term care. We analyse three ethnographic cases that demonstrate how making home in care revolves around processes of fitting and unfitting where gender, kinship, social class, material culture and belonging play a determining role. We conclude that the cultural model of home in ageing care, far from being unique and static, demonstrates great dynamism and variability.
