    Abstract:
    In this article we wish to discuss how the teaching of modern languages has been encouraged in the framework of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza (Free Institution of Teaching). From the very beginning the Institution has been concerned with the teaching of living languages, something that was given very little value by the Spanish educational system of the time. The work carried out by the boarding institutions of the JAE on modern language teaching has made a considerable contribution to the field, as have the articles on language teaching published in the BILE. At the same time, the approach to modern language teaching in the Institute-School can be qualified as rigorous and effective. At long last the means were being sought to prevent languages from being the complementary and secondary subjects that they were in most of the official institutions of the country.
