Abstract: In this comprehensive Review, we describe the development of chiral analogs of Crabtree's catalyst for the asym. hydrogenation of alkenes with particular emphasis on the developments made during the past 5 years. Our aim is to provide a clear overview of the catalysts suitable for a particular application with a given alkene, and to define the areas that need further studies. In addn. to reviewing recent advances, we also want to clarify the scope and limitations of the N,¿P-¿ligated iridium system and, where relevant, compare it to other available catalytic systems.
