Abstract: This article analyses the counter-revolution and the anti-revolution in Catalonia during the Liberal Triennium (1820-1823): their
development, their mobilization and organizational forms, their actions, their grassroots,
their leaders and their political culture. The
counter-revolution and the anti-revolution,
the royalist movement, have a dialectical relation with the liberal revolution and this is the
reason why a joint analysis is essential to understand them both. During the Liberal Triennium, the royalist movement was a heterogeneous and complex group that channelled
the counter-revolution by the old ruling classes as well as the anti-liberalism of a part of the
lower classes, mainly in rural regions but also
in urban areas, around the chant of «Long live
the King and the religion!».
