    Resumen:
Professional storytelling is a performance discipline that consists of telling stories orally to an audience. This artistic profession coexists with spontaneous and everyday storyte-lling and has developed certain specific attributes in recent years. The article suggests the use of the latest contributions to the field of folklore and ethnopoetry as an interpretative framework suitable for the study of professional storytelling. In this regard, we study the relation between professional storytelling and folklore, defined as artistic communication among small groups and ethnopoetry as a branch of folklore that studies verbal art. We then examine the professional storyteller’s repertoire in terms of the genre system and the relation between the artist and the audience. Our analysis shows that the story-teller’s repertoire is highly varied and that their relationship with the audience is a deci-sive element in choosing a genre or story. Finally, we analyse the artistic work produced through this repertoire, in particular in relation to oral transmission and writing.
