    Abstract:
In the rural communities on the coast and in the mountains of Oaxaca, it is increasingly common to find a woman at the head of the household carrying out key functions within the domestic group. These women can be seen working at home, looking after the crops, raising chickens, sewing coffee, fetching firewood and/or water or engaged in handicrafts. This is in addition to looking after the children and being responsible for all of their meals. Faced with the need to improve their socioeconomic situations, many of these women have joined programmes that promote emancipatory activities, despite the fact that this further increases their workload both within and outside the home.

Faced with the need to improve their socioeconomic situations, many of these women have joined programmes that promote emancipatory activities, despite the fact that this further increases their workload both within and outside the home.
