Resumen: It is the aim of this paper to consider some of the social and biographical aspects that form the background to Doris Lessing's literary career. Her political commitment, her rejection of academicism and conventional education, the constant shifts of her fiction, appear less confusing when we read about Lessing's experience in Africa, a long period of her life which we have chosen to call her «passage» to England.
