The aim of the thesis entitled The technical lexis of photography in 19th-century Spanish is to document the creation of terms related to photography in Spanish. The need to delimit the scope of this study led me to establish some time limits and restrict the field of research: thus, I shall deal with the appearance of photography and I shall follow its evolution throughout the 19th century but I shall not discuss the development of colour photography.ResultsAs far as the academic dictionaries in the 19th-century are concerned, the number of new words related to photography increase with each successive edition parallel to the development of the technique in question. The attitude of the Academy to the adoption of technical terms also significantly affected the rhythm of incorporations, and the result was that more new terms were included in the more important editions. Although technical terms normally appear in texts for specialists before they appear in lexicographic works, it is significant that the terms related to photography were not included in the Diccionario Académico until half a century later. This trend, which can be seen in the dictionaries of the Real Académia from the invention of photography, has been maintained over time despite the considerable popularity that the technique has now acquired. The result is that there are very few of these terms in the latest edition of the DRAE.Likewise, it has been shown that non-academic 18th-century dictionaries tend to include scientific vocabulary much sooner and in much greater quantities than the RealAcademia dictionaries. So, the vocabulary of photography is represented much more widely in these dictionaries than in the Academy dictionaries, which were to be influenced by the new lexicographical currents and soon began to increase the volume of specialist terms in their repertory.As far as the texts are concerned, the number of specialist terms used did not increase as much as it did in dictionaries as the century wore on and much of the vocabulary studied was already included in the first photographic manuals. On the other hand, the terms were far from well established because photography was still a very young technique throughout the 19th century. Many of the terms were not creations of photography strictly speaking but were taken from other specialities (such as chemistry, physics, optics or painting) or general language without changing the meaning significantly (diafragma, amplificar, cliché, etc.). On other occasions, as new realities came into being, new names were created, such as enfocar, fotografía, cámara fotográfica, etc. Finally, as far as the form of the words belonging to photography is concerned, open-form compound words are of particular importance and are used to describe and classify concepts.
