Departament of Medicine & SurgeryLYMPHOCYTE SUBSETS IN SMALL-FOR-GESTATIONAL AGE NEONATES Small-for-gestational age (SGA) neonates share particular characteristics, group identity and evolution which turn them into a differentiated group. We have studied some immune characteristics of 82 full-term SGA neonates (study group) and 35 full-term appropriate-for-gestational age (AGA) neonates (control group). SGA have a significant deficiency in absolute number of total leukocytes, lymphocytes and B-lymphocytes as well as in the percentage of B-cells. Leukocytes, lymphocytes and total CD8 values decrease with maternal age and with the number of gestation, increasing the ratio CD4/CD8. These results confirm that SGA neonates are a differentiated and specific group more prone to infections.
