Abstract:
In this thesis two main objectives have been established. The first objective is defined as an academic objective and refers to checking whether there is a growing interest from academics on the transport sector, particularly on air transport. Due to the scarcity of studies dedicated exclusively to review the existing literature on air transport from the social sciences’ perspective, this thesis intends to identifystructure, synthesize and analyze the literature in the air transport sector in the field of social sciences by adopting the Systematic Literature Review methodology. The second objective is defined as a practical objective, i.e. to analyze the relationship between personnel costs and the type of airlines. It should be noted that the empirical study carried out has been focused on secondary data on airlines located in Europe. This descriptive and exploratory study offers useful information that is important for the airline industry, because personnel costs represent an important part of costs in the organizational structure of anycompany in the sector. This thesis presents different statistical analysis principally on the basis of the following variables: labour costs, type of airline and geographical location of the airline. To analyze the relationship between labour costs and the type of airlines, we first analyze the labour costs of all employees holistically and classify airlines in three types: banner, low-cost and regional regular-charter airlines. Next, we check the relationship between the labour costs and the geographical location of airlines dividing them into four zones: continental Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Scandinavia and the UK.
