    Resumen:
CHANGES IN ZINC, COPPER AND METALLOTHIONEIN METABOLISM IN TYPE 2 DIABETES MELLITUS.INTRODUCTION: Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (DM) hyperglycemia can cause some alterations in zinc (Zn), copper (Cu) and metallothionein (MT) status.MAIN OBJECTIVE: To evaluate MT as an indicator of Zn and Cu status in type 2 DM.SECONDARY OBJECTIVES: 1. To determine serum (srm-), hematic (hem-) and urinary (uri-) levels of Zn, Cu, ceruloplasmin (CP) and MT in control and type 2 DM groups. 2. To analyze the differences between both groups. 3. To analyze the relationships among these parameters in either group.MATERIAL AND METHODS: 170 type 2 diabetic patients, aged 35 to 65 years, with less than 10 years of evolution, only diet-treated and with absence of type 2 DM complications were recruited. 210 healthy subjects, aged 35 to 65 years, without either pharmacological treatment and familial history of type 2 DM were studied as a control group. Body mass index (BMI), basal glucose, glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), srm-(CP, Zn, Cu and MT), hem-(Zn, Cu and MT) and uri-(Zn, Cu and MT) were determined.RESULTS: There were no differences between type 2 DM and controls regarding srm-Zn levels. Type 2 DM patients displayed higher srm-(Cu, MT and CP), hem-(Zn, Cu and MT) and uri-(Zn, Cu and MT) levels than controls. Srm-CP correlated with srm-Cu in both groups. In type 2 DM patients, glucose and HbA1c were correlated with srm-Cu, hem-Cu and uri-Cu. Likewise, glucose was the only predictive parameter of hem-MT levels in the type 2 DM group.Neither duration of diabetes nor BMI affected any of the studied parameter levels.CONCLUSIONS: 1. Type 2 DM group displayed higher Zn, Cu and CP levels than controls. 2.The metabolic control of type 2 DM patients could participate in the pathogenesis of the increased Cu l
