Resumen:
This research project is based on the belief that all people should have the same possibilities, and therefore, inequality, discrimination, segregation and exclusion must be avoided. We should all have equal rights and opportunities in education, at work and in all aspects of our lives in society.Disabled people's access to and integration in universities can currently be considered to be an expanding phenomenon, and in some cases is now becoming consolidated. This is due, among other reasons, to a series of changes and initiatives in the regulation, organisation and operative areas of the education and social environment. Among others, we can highlight the following:· There is now greater recognition of the rights of disabled people. Social recognition of rights to equal opportunities for all people, together with regulations created for the education of disabled people have contributed to this progress. The principles of non-discrimination, equality of opportunities, integration and regulation have been taken up by the United Nations with the following initiatives: The World Action Program for People with Disabilities (1983); Standard Rules on the Equalisation of Opportunities for People with Disabilities (1993), Declaration of Salamanca (1994); and also by the European council: European Social Model (1996), Luxembourg Model (1996), European Union Treaty, Amsterdam (1997); and closer to home, by Spain: Law of Social Integration of People with Disabilities, LISMI (1982), Law for Organic Planning of the Education System, LOGSE (1990), Organic Law of Universities (2001;2007) Law of Equal Opportunities and Non-discrimination of People with Disabilities (2003), and the Royal Decree of University Education Planning (2007)· The support given to students with disabilities at the education levels before University.· The architectural, technological and communication barriers are progressively being overcome, making it possible to enter education autonomously, independently from the student's physical and sensorial capacities.· The influence of the social environment on the educational environment, reinforced by a greater social sensitivity to including disabled people in all environments, including university studies. These and other aspects make it necessary to study the measures, resources, services and actions that preserve the rights of people with disabilities to equal opportunities in university education. Most Spanish universities are not in conditions to provide this equality of opportunities for the full range of students. Therefore, slowly, over time, services have been created to attend to the needs of students with disabilities. Currently, there are many universities that have specific services and programs for students with special needs. The aim of this work is to demonstrate which are the needs, expectations, interests, difficulties and demands expressed by students with some type of disability at the University Rovira i Virgili, both inside the classroom and in any other part of their university life. Our objective is to propose ways in which to improve not only the teaching and learning aspects for students with special needs but also their life quality while at university. The analysis and assessment of the needs expressed by the students, an exhaustive revision of the legislation and an analysis of work carried out by the support services in other universities have allowed us to build a base from which to create a support service for students with some type of disability at the University Rovira i Virgili.
