Abstract:
Introduction: Physical activity has numerous physical and psychological benefits, in addition to helping prevent major causes of morbidity and mortality in Western countries. The percentage of sedentary adult women is currently increasing. Knowing the benefits of Zumba, a modality that involves both music and dancing, could serve as an argument and a pretext for introducing physical activity to sedentary women. Objective: to determinate the benefits that regular Zumba practitioners associate with that practice. Methodology: Qualitative study of phenomena for descriptive and interpretive purposes. The perceptions of adult women practicing in the gym Vilarenc Aqua were investigated by analyzing fifteen written and structured interviews with open questions. To contrast the usual perceptions of practitioners and complete the sample, the testimony of two informants who left practice were incorporated. In this case, data were collected by a semistructured oral interview. Results: Four concepts emerged from the analysis, with different categories in each. These concepts are: personal motivations and physical, psychological and social effects. In addition, proposals were made to improve adherence to the activity, which were grouped together under the concept: areas for improvement. Conclusions: Zumba practitioners receive numerous benefits associated with their practice, as well as related health and wellness. Keywords: Zumba, physical activity, women, sedentary lifestyle, health and wellness.
