Abstract:
Introduction: Malnutrition in hospitalized patients over 65 years old is a very frequent geriatric syndrome caused by a variety of factors. It determines not only the length of the hospital stay but also the possible appearing of other pathologies in the patient. Objective: Identify the factors that can promote and / or prevent malnutrition of the elderly in the hospital setting. Methodology: A bibliographical revision has taken place by using database from PubMed, CINAHL and Cuiden, applying key words related to the objectives. Results: 19 articles have been selected showing different factors that cause malnutrition, such as environmental factors, factors derived from the illness itself and factors derived from hospitalization itself. Besides, factors that can prevent such pathology, such as support at lunchtime, nursing, nutritional supplement and sieving techniques for an early detection have also been taken iinto account. Conclusions: Knowing both the factors which cause and protect from malnutrition in a hospitalized patient will let us improve the approach on such situations and thus reduce morbidity and mortality as well as medical expenses. It is clear that there is a low diagnosis on malnourished patients, while prevalence is still quite high. Nursing staff is key when proceeding with nutritional sieving throughout checkups and sieving tools.
