    Abstract:
Background: Anxiety, stress, frustration, anger, despair, loneliness, fear. These are some of the negative feelings felt by patients who wake up in the ICU connected to invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV), feeling trapped and without control of the situation. Information is the only thing that can help to reduce these negative emotions, but how can they communicate if they do not have voice? With the use of light sedation, the number of conscious patients in the ICU has increased, and it has been necessary to develop different techniques and methods to communicate with patients with IMV. - Objective: To analyze the methods and interventions in the communication process with the patient with IMV. - Design: Bibliographic review of 15 articles from PubMed, Cinahl, Cuiden and Scopus databases during the months of October 2018 to May 2019. - Conclusions: The nurses are the responsible of encouraging the relationship nurse - patient, they should cheer up the patients to work on communication techniques to express their concerns and needs. The use of SCAA, VOCA and SV would make easier the communication, but, due to lack of training and availability in the ICU, communication is not the main concern of the staff.
