Abstract:
Introduction: Being a mother implies changes at all levels in women's lives. This responsibility, together with the development of the professional career, can generate in some women feelings of dissatisfaction or sadness, not being able to reach everything with diligence. The evolution of the maternal role in relation to the female role has undergone variations throughout history. The Spanish Civil War, with the role of women as creators of life, gave rise to the cohesion of two separate roles. Although, feminist authors such as Beauvoir; Lazarre or Rich, have helped in the untying of these roles, women mothers and workers need to reconcile them and can live them as a responsibility difficult to assume. Objectives: To explore the perceptions of mothers who combine motherhood with working life. Assess the consequences of the double role (maternal/professional) and the culture of the "good mother" in health processes. Methodology: Pilot study of phenomenological and interpretative character. The sample has been made by 4 women with children between 6 months and 12 years. The data has been collected through open dialogue interviews. The results have been classified into five general themes that have subsequently been confronted with the key concepts of reference of the theoretical framework. Results and discussion: The women reveal changes between the preconceived ideas they had about the process and the subsequent experience. The accomplishment of the double role associated with the "double presence" (maternal and professional) causes in women feelings of pressure, incompetence or overwhelm. The support (among equals, institutional, family ...) for the interviewed is key to the development of an autonomous and comfortable motherhood. Conclusions: Motherhood is for our participants, one of the best events that has happened to them in their lives, although they recognize that there is a hidden and less beautiful part.
