Abstract:
Introduction: Cancer is one of the most important diseases concerning public health due to the high mortality rate and morbidity. Concrete achievements have taken place with regard to treatment and early diagnostic, though, many treatments that are currently being used are harmful and, often, they produce side effects which endanger people’s quality of life. The interest and use of complementary therapies is increasing because of the will of the patients to look for welfare and a healthy lifestyle. In recent years, these modalities are creating a new identity within the model of integrative medicine. This model is based on an integrative work of a multidisciplinary team and focuses its interest on the person from a bio-psycho-social-spiritual approach in which patient collaborates actively. The main objective of this study was to investigate the profile of people who suffer from cancer and use integrative medicine. Material and methods: An observational descriptive study was made with a transversal nature by quantitative and qualitative methodology. Results: The profile of the cancer patient user of integrative medicine was mostly feminine, middle aged, with university education or professional training, financially independent and employed, resides in a city with over 10.000 people and is married or lives as a couple. Conclusions: It is important for the sanitary professionals to have a basic knowledge of complementary therapies in order to guide or encourage them. Besides, the education in this field should be included in the academic curriculum so they can provide patients with information regarding the risks and the benefits with total certainty.
