    Abstract:
In Spain, during the last 25 years the female activity rate has increased, the schooling rate is higher than that of men at almost all ages and the birth rate has decreased. The number of active women has increased progressively in recent years. The most recent data show that women represent 44.8% of the employment rate. Despite these phenomena, there is still a strong labor segregation, women continue to occupy many of the jobs considered less qualified and with lower remuneration, in addition to occupying the largest volume of temporary work. As the schooling rate of women is higher than that of men at almost all ages, the fact that they occupy the least valued jobs and have a low representation in managerial positions clearly indicates that they have to deal with some kind of difficulty or impediment. If we look at the number of women who hold positions on the boards of companies in the IBEX 35, they make up only 23.2% of the positions compared to men in the first half of 2019 (INE, 2020), pending the publication of the results of the second semester. This is a value that remains extremely low and that encourages a multitude of studies on its possible causes. This is why the promotion of women to positions of leadership and responsibility has gained even more interest in recent years. The aim of this work is to determine what are the barriers and obstacles of the glass ceiling, the phenomenon that hinders women in their professional advancement.
