Abstract:
Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between different dimensions of personality and aggressiveness. Furthermore, we wanted to evaluate the relationship between the different personality traits and, in addition, to determine how gender and age affect aggressiveness and the type of personality. Methodology: We examined personality (assessed by the Big Five Personality Trait Short Questionnaire) and aggressiveness (assessed by the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire) in a sample of 234 male and female adults from the population of Tarragona. Subsequently, correlations were made between personality traits and the different types of aggressiveness and, also, correlations were made between the different personality factors. Furthermore, a Student’s t test was used to examine if there were differences in the averages of the variable ‘Sex’ and the variables of personality and aggressiveness, as well as an ANOVA analysis (Along with a post-hoc Tukey test) to determine if there were differences in the averages of the variable ‘Age’ and the variables of personality and aggressiveness. Results: The results suggested that type of personality is significantly associated to aggressiveness, specifically, a low level of Emotional Stability, Extraversion, Responsibility and Agreeableness was significantly associated to a higher level of aggressiveness. On the other hand, the results showed that females and older people have significantly lower levels of aggressiveness, that males have significantly lowers levels of Agreeableness and Responsability and that younger people have significantly lower levels of Extraversion and Agreeableness. In addition, it was also verified that all personality traits (Except Openness and Emotional Stability) were related to each other. Conclusion: These findings could help us to understand the personality profile of an aggressor, not to mention that it shows the importance of understanding how personality affects aggressiveness, as this could help to carry out prevention strategies to avoid certain people with the type of personality already mentioned develop aggressive behavior.
