Abstract:
Introduction: Nowadays, people’s lifestyle and the way that they relate to their environment has changed, and it includes their way of eating. We live in a context full of food diversity where is such evidence that diet is related to human’s health. In the past, Mediterranean diet was one of the most followed, but today because of several modifications it has increased the lipidic profile, which can result in health problems. Several health benefits have been associated with well-planned vegetarian diets so the number of people adopting them is constantly increasing, especially in western societies. This type of diet can meet all nutritional requirements if it is well planned so, moreover, there are variety of reasons for taking a vegetarian diet, including moral and ethical reasons. Aims and Method: This study has been performed through a qualitative methodology using an individual open semi-structured interview technique. The selection of the interviewed was made using the non-probabilistic sampling model with the aim of knowing the experience of vegetarian people an EMIC and phenomenology perspective. Results and discussion: People who follow any kind of vegetarian diet do it to animal abuse. Then, once they have more information about it, they extrapolate to other social problems, so that it affects on their lifestyle. The information sources come mostly from internet, which show a lack of confidence on health professionals. All of them have a good self-concept of health, fact that causes a lack of follow-up of the diet. Despite they know the risks and benefits, it also stands out the stigma that even today suffer this diets because of the lack of information about the matter. Conclusions: People who follow a vegetarian diet are satisfied with the decision they made and will not leave it.
