Abstract:
The contraceptive advice needs an holistic approach, based both on sexual and reproductive needs of woman or couple, and sociocultural criteria. Therefore, professionals must give objective and complete information and be sure that the woman takes part in all the election progress. Nowadays, the use of natural contraceptive methods is less than the other methods, as well as updated studies. In the present project, we set out to explore the situation of the natural contraceptive methods in the contraceptive advice; find out the knowledge that professionals have about them and how they recommend these methods. A quantitative observational descriptive, prospective and transversal study was carried out with the participation of 25 professionals from de ASSIR centres in Tarragona, Reus and Valls. As a data collect, we used an Ad hoc questionnaire, with 26 questions, created by us. During the analysis we noticed that the natural methods are not among the 10 most recommended contraceptive methods. A 32% (n=8) answered correctly all the questions about knowledge and a 52% (n=13) just failed one. Most of the professionals (66,7% (n=6)) who don’t recommend natural methods have a neutral or disagree stance. Despite almost all the professionals (92% (n=23)) know about shared decisions making, a 24% (n=6) don’t use them never or almost never during the contraceptive advice. We summed up that the natural contraceptive methods are less recommended than the others; that large randomized samples studies are needed to value their efficacy and that professionals’ opinion influences counselling.
