Abstract:
Introduction: Evidence proves that for the correct development and growth of the child, especially during the infant’s first 6 months, breastfeeding provides all the nutritional requirements needed until the sixth month, when complementary feeding is introduced. Thus, it is important to establish breastfeeding properly, and subsequently, to correctly monitor it in order to ensure a good baby’s nutritional status. Objective: The main objective of the study is to determine the nursing role in the establishment and monitoring of breastfeeding. Methodology: Study with qualitative methodology, interactionist, ethnographic perspective, based on an interpretative study and from an integrative/interactive paradigm point of view. The data collection was carried out thought semi-structured, individual and convenience interviews with the selected informants. Results: Three interviews were carried out, which were subsequently coded and analyzed to obtain the conclusion of the study. There were two different categories drawn from the interviews: establishment of breastfeeding and monitoring of breastfeeding. In each category, were found subcategories: health education for patients, training for professionals, protocol, breastfeeding surveillance, evaluation criteria, favorable conditions, pain and cracks, low self-confidence, ineffective breastfeeding, mother/child separation, CPP, manual colostrum extraction, mechanical colostrum extraction, increased mother-newborn contact, prenatal education, check-ups, ineffective breastfeeding, support and protection of breastfeeding, nutritional status, complications, breastfeeding positions, emotional support, breastfeeding and return to work, low socioeconomic level, breastfeeding abandonment, difficult lactation, complementary feeding, weaning, tandem lactation, postpartum group, artificial lactation. Conclusion: Based on the main objective proposed at the beginning of the research in along with the specific objectives, on the one hand, we have thrown light upon the role of nursing in the establishment and monitoring of breastfeeding, which is an active and involvement role, and the importance that this has for an optimal diet for the infant, as well as his/her proper development and growth. On the other hand, it has been possible to discover the nursing performance towards the established breastfeeding protocols, through the interviews which have been carried out. Finally, it has been possible to emphasize the importance of nursing performance in the breastfeeding process. We have also found out the main problems that can arise during breastfeeding and how to avoid or solve them, thus avoiding the abandonment of breastfeeding.
