Abstract The objective of this study is to do a literature review of the Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) and the use of the prone position (PP) strategy as a therapeutic treatment for its improvement. Papers included in the review date between 2008 and 2014, have either a qualitative, quantitative and review character and were written either in English or Spanish. Key words used were prone position, ARDS, nursing care and ursing care, combined with the Boolean operator and. Papers or articles in other languages, as well as, grey literature were excluded. PP has proven to improve oxygenation but not mortality rates. Consensus among the starting time of the action and the duration of this one does not exist. It is considered to be a safe strategy as long as professionals are well trained and a standardized protocol is followed. Keywords: Position prone, ARDS adult, acute respiratory distress syndrome, Nursing care, Critical nursing care.
